BMW ALPINA XD3

Powertrain

The foremost goal during the development of the new BMW ALPINA XD3 model was to push the envelope further and to improve upon the core values of the predecessor. Utilising state-of-the-art engine technology the new models offer an unrivalled driving experience in this segment characterised by power, torque, dynamic handling and comfort.

Building upon the excellence of the new BMW 3.0-liter straight-six engine with bi-turbocharging and common-rail high-pressure direct injection, the drivetrain of the new BMW ALPINA XD3 delivers a power output of 245 kW (333 hp). This is available over a bandwidth ranging from 4000 to 4600 rpm. The maximum torque of 700 Nm is already available from just 1750 rpm and up to 2500 rpm. The resulting performance figures are impressive, the new BMW ALPINA XD3 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds and has a top speed of 254 km/h – meaning it´s currently the fastest-in-segment!

The permanent turbocharging system with two turbochargers offers maximum performance. As a result, power delivery is smooth, effortless, and – for a diesel – unusually dynamic over the entire rpm range.

In combination with ALPINA CLASSIC 22“ forged wheels reduced top speed by approximately 5 km/h.

All-Wheel-Drive

The new BMW ALPINA XD3 capitalises on the technical potential of BMW’s xDrive system and its intelligent and dynamic distribution of drive power which continuously and fully variable distributes torque between the front and rear axle within milliseconds for maximum traction and control. The programming of the torque distribution control, which is interconnected with the Dynamic Stability Control and the engine management system, is performance-oriented and it increases driving agility and dynamics markedly – especially under lateral acceleration – while maintaining balanced and neutral handling.

The BMW ALPINA XD3 comes with an electronically controlled active rear limited slip differential. This improves traction when driving dynamically by ensuring that slip-induced losses are minimised and torque is distributed effectively to the wheel with the most grip at any given point in time. This further enhances driving dynamics, even in combination with all-wheel drive, and operates in conjunction with the ALPINA specific, rear-wheel biased, torque distribution.

Efficency

For ALPINA, low consumption and emissions have always been a high priority, often resulting in pioneering solutions first introduced in small series production. The SUPERKAT – an electronically heated metal catalytic converter – is a great example, meaning NOx and CO emissions were 80 % less than required by regulations in 1996. The new BMW ALPINA XD3 features the latest in exhaust gas treatment technology. In addition to a diesel particulate filter and a NOx storage catalytic converter, a SCR catalytic converter with aqueous urea solution injection (AdBlue®) reduces emissions to a minimum. The AdBlue® tank volume is 20 litres which typically equates to an average range of 10.000 km.
