The 3-litre six cylinder Bi-Turbo diesel engine sets standards in terms of power, torque and efficiency. The outstanding base engine from BMW is constructed entirely from light-weight aluminium and features latest-generation common rail direct fuel injection as well as a two-stage turbocharging with variable turbine geometry. Effective optimisation of pressure losses and special intake air ducts exploit the full engine potential and lead to significant gains in power output and enhanced engine characteristics. By also utilising the achievable boost and injection pressure a maximum power output of 257 kW (350 hp) at 4000 rpm and an impressive 700 Nm of torque between 1500 and 3000 rpm is achieved.

The throughput of the cooling system has a major influence on the performance of turbocharged engines. Full power delivery even under the highest thermodynamic loads is ensured by the high-performance cooling package, which comprises a large-volume intercooler with optimised intake and outlet ports as well as two radiators located in front of the wheel arches for optimum effectiveness. Despite its impressive performance characteristics and high specific power output, this drivetrain is also extremely economical. Long cruising ranges are achieved effortlessly thanks to a combined fuel consumption measured according to ECE norm of only 5.3 to 6.6 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 139 to 174 g/km, depending on the model.


The all-wheel drive system uses the technical possibilities of the BMW xDrive system, whose intelligent and dynamic control system distributes output smoothly and fully variably between the front and rear axles in milliseconds, thereby ensuring maximum traction and superior performance in all driving situations. The torque distribution control system, which is interconnected with the engine management and chassis control systems, is performance-oriented. It significantly increases driving dynamics and agility, particularly during high lateral acceleration and guarantees sporty and neutral handling. Besides ensuring optimal traction during acceleration by preventing slip-related losses, the system also permanently monitors the driving conditions and actively distributes torque to always ensure a high degree of propulsion and safety at all times, e.g. on snow or road surfaces with abrupt changes in the friction coefficients.



Exhaust System

The construction and design of the exhaust system, made from high-quality materials, guarantees an elegant look and emotional acoustics foregoing the need for technical compromises. The silencer volume is reduced to a minimum in order to optimise the exhaust gas flow characteristics and to reduce weight. Simultaneously the exhaust system produces a pleasingly rich sound for a diesel vehicle, particularly at higher engine speeds. Downstream of the middle silencer, the specific pipe routing is realised in stainless steel and ends in the two elliptical twin tailpipes typical for ALPINA, with discreet ALPINA and Akrapovič lettering.
